This Is A Good Thing

Big ups to the Colorado Film Commission. They are backing proposed legislation that would give significant tax incentives to production companies choosing to film in Colorado. The 25% incentive, similar to what other states offer, could help sway studios during their decision process and land more big productions here. There have been a handful of good-sized productions here in the recent past – like Eddie Murphy’s Nowhereland last October – but somehow our feelings are still a little hurt by the unflattering light cast on Denver in About Schmidt. That was like seeing a candid party photo of yourself and realizing that yes, your ass really has gotten that big. That’s okay, Hollywood. We started working out since then. We’ll win you back.

Here are a few reasons why this is good for all of us:

• More creative attention put on Colorado and Denver never hurt anybody.

• Extra work for the talented crews already here.

• If Mandy Moore came to town to shoot, she would totally go out with us. (By the way, Mandy, why won’t you return our calls. Or emails. Or letters. Seriously, we could be so good together.)

It looks like the idea is

It looks like the idea is still in committee. If you’re behind the idea and have a couple of minutes, shoot an e-mail to your reps in the legislature. It’s easy through Project Vote Smart.

    Here’s the response I got

Here’s the response I got from State Rep. Joel Judd:

HB 1355 provides $25m in tax credits for film production. That’s good. It takes that money from the fund that repairs dilapidated bridges and failing roofs on state buildings. That’s bad. If we raid that fund, I’d much rather put the money into higher education. We’d have both an immediate payoff and long term benefit to Colorado.

    This HB was defeated 6-5

This HB was defeated 6-5 earlier this week.

I just don’t understand this state and it’s thinking sometimes.

I’m not an economist, but wouldn’t there still be a positive in the revenue column if there IS ‘new business’ rather than NO ‘new business’ coming to this state?

Right, I think 175 year old

Right, I think 175 year old men often forget about creating revenue from new business. The west was once a popular location to film and had a lot of incentive for studios to shoot here. Unfortunately the way the film industry is being treated as a whole lately, it might be less than a decade for Montreal (is being claimed to be the new hollywood for the sudden influx of studios) to take all of the business…
