Wednesday Lunchtime Poll #4
This week’s question: We’re developing a sister site called The Denver Logoist. We want to know, who among you can design a free logo the fastest? GO!
Oh, but seriously. That’s not really the poll. Settle down now. Easy. Jeez.
Let’s talk office decorum, agency behavior and levels of appropriateness. When you’re in the biz (Note: Only those who are in “the biz” are allowed to call it “the biz”), we seem to be afforded a certain level of freedom in the workplace. And by “freedom” we mean the liberal use of F-bombs, dick jokes and a general caveman sensibility when it comes to others’ feelings. It’s nice, right?
What we want to know is this: Are you ever offended in the workplace? Should agencies be held to the same standard of puritanical mores as corporate America? Or does part of the creative process mean letting loose and saying whatever, whenever?
Give us your take. And while you’re thinking about it, might we say that your ass looks really good in those jeans.

Thanks!
And might I say that you look like an ass for saying it.

Freedom, baby! That’s what it’s fucking all about, ya know? Not having your dick in a sling! Slapping the other guy in the face and saying, “What the fuck, numb nuts!? Hit me with it!” and going with the flow.
I know that made no sense. Point is, if it’s all in good fun it’s hard to offend me. If it’s thoughtless, malicious, or just plain stupid I’ll get offended. Otherwise I say people are too uptight.
Then again there are people who consider an image representing a middle finger to be creative. So, you know, it takes all kinds.

Even as a creative, the acceptability of a lack of verbal filter is inversely related to your years on the planet. It’s less scoffed upon when you’re young, because you’re just a little, know-it-all pissant in the eyes of your seniors. As you age, you are expected to mature and carry yourself with more refinement and professionalism.
Fortunately, The Egotist will always provide a haven when we really need to unleash and act like a bunch of drunk frat fucks.

I have never worked in an office as liberal as the one I am in now.
There is no dress code here, although I still wear collared shirts & pressed pants; everyone uses the F-bomb liberally; and sometimes they’ll talk down to clients. As a junior designer, I would rather be working in a professional, traditional studio (think Communication Arts; no sandals, clean, impressive clothes & conduct codes that further the identity of the studio). I feel being so young in the profession, sometimes heavy liberal attitudes and lax conduct codes can be harmful to those new in the profession. I need to learn how to represent the firm in a good way – the last thing I want is say “fuck” in front of the wrong person, or look like a pile of dirty laundry in the office.
(+1 on what Hack Boy said.)

We’ll make you a free logo. Fortunately, we’re busy enough with paying clients to have time fuck around. Oh, we use the word “fuck” liberally in our workspace. It’s a great descriptor.

And apparently you’re so busy with paying clients you hold logo competitions to handle the non-paying stuff. Wait, that's not a bad idea...

just say no to free anything.. discounted maybe in the right circumstance… a favor for a regular paying client or similar person.. logo for mom’s candy shop.. maybe..
verbal filters… not.. there’s a reason why we’re not working in accounting and brokerages. there’s a reason we picked advertising and design over beancounting.
