Wednesday Lunchtime Poll #8

By / /

All work and no play makes Jack a complete wacko. We know there are plenty of you out there who have embraced this to the point of establishing a side career. What we want to know is:

What is your side career, and how has it influenced the way you look at advertising and design?

Well, I just took up acting

Well, I just took up acting after a long hiatus from my youth. I am taking classes at both the Denver Center for Performing Arts and Front Range Acting Studio.

Not sure how it is going to effect things yet. If I get signed with an agent in the next 6 months and start auditioning for parts then it could effect things.

I am finally working out some advertising for my blog and about to fill my online storefront with a whole lot of goods. That could make a nice little impact on my life and finances.

Overall I have found, especially in this town, if you want to be progressive and make something happen for yourself, you’d better be willing to bust your ass outside of your dayjob. Don’t take no for an answer and be persistent. If your job gets in the way of what you really want to do then keep doing both until you can override one with the other. I don’t think there is really any other way to do it.

    I do pro-bono posters for

I do pro-bono posters for bands that I enjoy (and hope one day they’ll get big and want me to design for them.)

I also just started racing school so I can eventually track my car – don’t really want to be a professional racer, just need a rush every now and then. 🙂

    Past-President of Ad2 Ft.

Past-President of Ad2 Ft. Lauderdale for 2 years before moving to Denver & now belong to Ad2 Denver!

Yeah, it sounds nerdy but its how I pretty moved to a much better job market and why I’ve got a banging resume with added experience and industry insight. ps. I am looking for an agency position in Account Service 🙂

Ad2 Denver is a non-profit, advertising networking group for go-getting young pros affiliated w/ the New Denver Ad Club & nationally w/ the AAF and National Ad2. So we do what we do because we want to and we’re passionate for this crazy industry. Its also a great way to keep on top of the latest trends, network your way to the job you want, and meet people with the same interest & field.

Ad2 also gives back to the community in its yearly public service pro-bono campaign. Last year, Ad 2 Denver placed 2nd in the National Ad 2 Public Service Competition in their work for BWAMM, Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum. They designed their corporate identity, all supporting collateral, and increased their brand awareness in time for their grand opening.

Ad2 has helped me advance tremendously in my career, and it could the same for you! Email me or check the website to learn more. Ok, I’m done with my pom-poms. Do it, get involved! 🙂

since i write for a living,

since i write for a living, the last thing you’d think i’d want to do in my spare time would be to write some more. (at least that’s what the wife says. she’d rather i worked on the house.) but my last position was so suffocating that i had to do something to keep my brain from eating itself. so, when i’m not writing ads, i write other stuff on that big series of tubes known as the interwebs.

i started out recapping tv shows for tvgasm, but they sold out and didn’t split the loot. so me and some other writers started our own site, midseasonreplacements.com.

i’m also writing an online serial novel. it’s a zombie-comedy, or zomcom. i used to publish a new chapter every monday, but since going freelance a couple months back i haven’t added anything to it lately. hopefully i’ll get a chance to dive back in soon; colorado springs was quickly becoming even more brain-dead than it is in real life.

    A few years back, financial

A few years back, financial circumstances led me to become a snowboard instructor.

I got into it for the free season pass, but five years later, I’m still teaching and it’s about so much more.

It has made me realize how singular our view becomes. We tend to lose touch with the people our work is meant to reach and simply create something we think is cool that will impress our fellow creatives.

I now make a point to reach out and talk to a few people in the target I am creating for, before I begin to actually execute.

I write for a blog offering

I write for a blog offering advice about saving money. What interests me most is the instant results I can get from testing different types of headlines. Some articles will get over 20,000 reads in just a few days, others one tenth of that, despite both being on similar, if not identical, topics. Also, seeing how people react to different types of advertising offers, and how annoyed they get, has also helped me to improve how I approach anything from direct mail to radio scripts.
